My name is Miles Davies, and I'm a fourth year student studying Japanese. I am a highly motivated and enthusiastic person, and I love feeling like I'm making a positive difference.
This year I'm School Rep for Non-European Languages and have spent the year fighting for students' views. So far I have helped save a module from not running to give students better module options, changed the Learning and Teaching Strategy for the School of Modern Languages and Cultures to deliver faster feedback, and arranged for more student involvement in the changes to modules following module reviews.
I have really enjoyed being able to make a difference this year, and would love the chance to do greater good on a wider scale. Being Education Officer would allow me to listen to your views and push them through to make the changes a reality.
As School Rep I attend meetings at all levels of the University, including the Senate, where top-level decisions are discussed and agreed upon. In many cases I work with the current Education Officer, giving me unique insight into the role and what would be expected of me.
This year I was elected as the Chair of the East Asian Studies Student-Staff Forum. As a result, I have experience creating agendas and leading both students and staff in discussions of the issues facing education now.
In my first and third years I was Course Rep for Japanese, and on my year abroad I was Year Abroad Leader, so throughout my academic career I have been creating and building upon a strong relationship with staff and students. This has also given me a thorough understanding of the University's decision-making process, which would be a valuable asset if I were to be elected.
This year I am also an Intercultural Ambassador, which means that I create, manage and market events that help international students and home students meet and engage in a cultural exchange. I am also a member of the Japanese Society committee, a position in which I deal with problems and quickly find solutions.
If you want an Education Officer who will really listen and go the extra Miles to make the changes you want to see, vote Miles Davies #1 for Education!
